Guide to borrowing materials from other libraries through interlibrary loan

Who Is Eligible to Borrow through ILL?

We provide materials that are needed for academic purposes and that are not available at the UNT Dallas Library. Interlibrary Loan services are provided only for active UNT faculty and staff and currently enrolled undergraduate, graduate and law school students.

What Can I Borrow?

What materials can I borrow?

  • Books, journal articles, and book chapters.
  • UNT Dallas Libraries materials that are lost, missing, checked out, or not available.
  • Theses and Dissertations: Check our Ebsco & ProQuest databases along with other resources on the Dissertations and Theses page before submitting a request.

What materials am I not able to borrow?

  • Textbooks for current courses (including older editions).
  • Complete issues of periodicals
  • Software
  • Sound recordings
  • DVD’s and videos

How Much Does it Cost?

We will make every attempt to borrow for free. However, if a cost is involved, the request may be cancelled/unfilled as these requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.  You will be notified if your request is cancelled/unfilled.

How Many Items May I Borrow?

You may have up to 7 active requests on your Tipasa account at one time.

How Long Does it Take?

Please allow 2 to 3 weeks for delivery of print materials and 1 to 2 weeks for PDFs of articles. When requesting print materials, please be aware that the time taken for materials to arrive depends upon the difficulty of the request, the proximity of the lending library to UNT Dallas, and how much time lending libraries take to fill the request.

How Will I Be Notified?

When materials arrive, you will receive an email notification. Print materials will be held for seven days. If they are not picked up within this time-frame they will be returned to the lending library. PDFs of articles will be stored on the Tipasa server for 30 days.  You will receive an email notifying you that the PDF is available for you to download.  You should then log in to your Tipasa account to download the article.

How Long is the Loan Period?

The loan period and renewal options are determined by the lending library. The loan period is usually 2 to 4 weeks. If you would like to request a renewal, do so through your Tipasa account.

How Long Are Article Links Active in Tipasa?

Once a document has been uploaded, it is available for 30 days or 5 views, whichever comes first.

How Do I Pickup and Return Materials?

Books borrowed through Interlibrary Loan by patrons residing within 30 miles of the UNT Dallas main campus must be picked up and returned to the UNT Dallas Main Library. Books not picked up within 7 days after receiving a notification email/text will be returned to the lending library.

How can a Distance Learning Student (Graduate or Undergraduate) or Off-Campus Faculty Member request Books?

UNT Dallas patrons who live less than 30 miles from the UNT Dallas Main Campus must pick up and return borrowed books to campus.

Books will be mailed to patrons who live more than 30 miles from the UNT Dallas main campus and a return mailer will be provided at no cost to the borrower. Please enter the term "remote" or "off campus" in the Notes field of your book request.

What Happens If I Lose or Damage an ILL Book?

You, the borrower, are financially responsible for any damage to or loss of interlibrary loan materials, from the time you pick them up until you return them to the UNT Dallas Library. Should any damage occur, report it to the UNT Dallas Library. Do not attempt to repair the damage yourself.

Why is My Account Blocked?

A patron’s account may be blocked for one of the following reasons:

  • One or more overdue items

  • A recalled item has not been returned

  • 5 or more items have been requested within a given semester and never picked up.

  • An outstanding debt to the library

Please contact the library at 972-338-1616 or ill@untdallas.edu for more information.

What Should I Know About Copyright Restrictions on Interlibrary Loans?

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction.
One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purposes other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would violate copyright law.
