Guide to borrowing materials from other libraries through interlibrary loan

Before Placing a Request

Before making a request, please search the library catalog and/or electronic resources to make sure that the item is not available through the UNT Dallas Library.

Please allow 1-2 weeks for PDFs of articles/book chapters and 2-3 weeks for the delivery of books. The time needed to process varies based upon the difficulty of the request, the proximity of the lending library to UNT Dallas, and how much time lending libraries take to fill the request.

Requests made within 1-2 weeks (for articles/book chapters) or 2-3 weeks (for books) of the end of the current semester may not be filled as there may not be enough time for lending libraries to fill the request.

Questions or Concerns? Please contact the library at 972-338-1616 or ill@untdallas.edu

Placing Requests

There are two ways to place an ILL request with Tipasa: directly through your Tipasa patron portal or via a link out from an electronic resource (where available)

Direct requests

Depending on the material, a patron can fill out one of three forms: book, article, and book chapter. Each form requires specific information regarding not only the patron but the item being requested. Please provide as much information in the request as possible as it will give us the best opportunity to find the appropriate materials.

Via Electronic Resources (where available)

Our database providers such as EBSCO and ProQuest allow auto-populating of the Tipasa request form. Look for a "Request this item via interlibrary loan" or "Get a Copy" link or similar when viewing an article citation in one of these resources.

PLEASE NOTE: Because ILL requests are tied to each individual patrons’ UNT Dallas account, it is important that requests NEVER be submitted for another patron through your personal account.

Requesting an Article/Book Chapter

Step 1 - Choose the Article/Book Chapter request form if you are requesting a journal or magazine article or book chapter. These can be from print or electronic journals and books.

Step 2 - Complete the form as best you can. You can help us find exactly what you need by providing the journal's ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) or book's ISBN (International Standard Book Number), but that information is not required for submission of the request.

Step 3 - Read and acknowledge the copyright declaration.

Step 4 - Click on the Submit Request button at the bottom of the form.

Once it is submitted, the library staff will search to find lenders for your source. Once a lender provides the article/book chapter, you will receive an email with a link and password to download a PDF of the requested item. Once you receive the link, you may download the PDF up to five times, and the link will remain active for 30 days. Once downloaded, you may keep the PDF -- no need to return it.

Each article/book chapter requires a separate request even if within the same issue of a journal/book.

Requesting a Book

Step 1 - Choose the Book request form for borrowing print books (e-books are not available for borrowing in their entirety -- chapters only).

Step 2 - Complete the form as best you can. You can help us find exactly what you need by providing the book's ISBN (International Standard Book Number), but that information is not required for submission of the request.

Step 3 - For Distance Learners & Off-Campus Faculty Only - If you live 30 miles or more from the UNT Dallas campus, enter the word "remote" or "off-campus" in the Notes field. Be sure to enter your mailing address in the provided address fields.

Step 4 - Click on the Submit Request button at the bottom of the form.

We will begin with Texas libraries and then extend the search throughout the U.S. if necessary. Books take 1-3 weeks to obtain because they need to physically travel here by mail or courier, so please plan ahead in your research. Due dates and renewal policies differ from library to library; please plan to return or renew your book before or by the due date on the book strap.

Requesting Renewals

Renewals are granted by the lending library and can only be processed through your ILL account.

First check the book-strap around your book to see if renewals are not allowed.  Certain libraries will not allow renewals and that is indicated on the book strap. Note - The option to renew is no longer available once the item is overdue.

If the lending library allows renewal requests:

  • Log into your account at the Tipasa Patron Portal at https://untdallas.account.worldcat.org/account
  • Click on the Renew Request button to the right of the book title you wish to renew.
  • A renewal request will be sent to the lending library and you will receive a confirmation email.
