MLA 9th Edition Guide: Works Cited Examples

This is a quick guide intended to introduce users to the Modern Language Association (MLA) 9th edition citation style.

Reference List Examples

The following are examples of references organized by the type of information. 

Book (Basic Format)

Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. City of Publication, Publisher, Publication Date.

   

Cohen, Joshua. The Netanyahus: An Account of a Minor and Ultimately Even Negligible Episode in the History of a

                    Very Famous Family. United States, New York Review Books, 2021.


Book (with more than one author)

When a book has two authors, order the authors in the same way they are presented in the book.

 

Colburn, Gregg, and Aldern, Clayton Page. Homelessness Is a Housing Problem: How Structural Factors Explain

                U.S. Patterns. United States, University of California Press, 2022.

 

If there are three or more authors, list only the first author followed by the phrase et al. For example the book Text as Data was written by three authors Justin Grimmer, Margaret E. Roberts, and Brandon M. Stewart. However, only the author listed first will appear in the citation. 

 

Grimmer, Justin, et al. Text as Data: A New Framework for Machine Learning and the Social Sciences. United States,

               Princeton University Press.

 

Magazine Article

Basic Formati:

 

Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Periodical, Day Month Year, pages.

 

Lewis, Helen. “The Scapegoat.” Atlantic, Nov. 2022, pp. 58–68.

 

Newspaper Article

Newspaper articles are cited like magazine articles with the exception that newspaper articles often have different types of page numbers see example below.

 

Crowley, Michel, and Eileen Sullivan. “Immigration On Agenda In a Meeting With Mexico.” New York Times, 14 Oct. 2022, p. A7.

 

ARTICLE IN A SCHOLARLY JOURNAL

Basic Format: 

Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Journal, Volume, Issue, Year, pages.

 

Wolfe, Matthew, and Eric Klinenberg. “Towards a Theory of Social Repair.” Social Research, vol. 88, no. 3, Fall 2021,

                 pp. 1–36.
